Kitchen Ideas: Ways to Refresh the Most Used Room in Your Home

Keeping your kitchen updated and fresh not only makes cooking and chatting with family and friends enjoyable, it also adds return on investment should you ever decide to sell your home.

Adding some trends to your cooking area can provide some culinary inspiration, while refreshing common appliances can take your kitchen to a whole new level. Kitchen ideas are numerous, so there is no time like the present to start browsing, selecting, and installing and/or changing your kitchen so that it has a whole new look!

“Green” Kitchen Cabinets

Current kitchen trends are focusing on natural, Earth-friendly materials. Natural wood stains and open shelving options are quite popular as are all white kitchen cabinets. If you are very concerned about installing “green” cabinets, look for the Environmental Stewardship Program seal on the product and/or ask the manufacturer or distributor to see if they are participating in the program. The seal indicates that specific “green” standards, such as manufacturing practices and using recycled materials, are being followed. There are only 22 manufacturers in the United States who have received this certification. Environmentally friendly cabinets are just as functional and sturdy as traditional hardwood cabinets and home buyers look for the use of these products when purchasing a home in today’s market.

High Tech/Multi-Functional

High tech appliances that are multi-functional continue to make a grand appearance in kitchens. Siemen’s has a multimedia ventilation hood. There are refrigerators with high definition TV’s, cable, DVD, and FM radio along with a weather display recessed on the refrigerator doors. Dishwashers are available in super colors including blue, gray, slate green, and others. Blue Star’s gas range comes in 190 colors. Appliances are also available in matte black, rubbed bronze, and glass. Appliance fronts that match cabinets so that they “disappear” are also popular. You will also see iPad docking stations that you can easily install under a kitchen cabinet for easy and safe use. Convenience is of prime importance in this trend.

Kitchen sinks have also become multi-functional. In addition to the kitchen sink being available in copper and with fashionable faucets, sinks are also serving several functions. A tempered glass preparation board, colander, drain train, as well as a pull out spray head faucet are all components of the Mythos sink system. Installing a kitchen sink properly so that it fits in the counter top correctly as well as does not leak may require you to consult a professional contractor or someone who has done this type of work successfully to help you install your new sink correctly.

Recycled Materials

In addition to kitchen cabinets, recycled materials continue to be on-trend in other areas of the kitchen. For example, a formaldehyde-free and food-safe bamboo butcher-block surface by Teragren is being used for counter tops and tabletops. Studio offers a wide-plank floating floor that uses TeraLoc — a self-locking system requiring no adhesive. Sustainable wood flooring, recycled countertops, and recycled tile for back splashes are all ways to incorporate recycled materials into your kitchen design.

More Kitchen Ideas

Other kitchen ideas that are making their appearance this year are wine coolers, lighting installed under counter tops that have an over hang, ready-to-hang back splashes, induction cook tops, unframed cook tops, and cook tops with no burners. Counter tops are expected to be either thinner or thicker than the traditional 1 ¼ inch or 1 ½ inch size, and black counter tops made from black granite or quartz are the preferred materials of choice.

You will also continue to see glass tile back splashes, personalized task lighting and white kitchens with a pop of color on one wall with an accent color throughout. Open floor plans are still popular. Those with an open floor plan with a kitchen/eating/living area should look to making sure that the look and feel of the kitchen extends into these other areas, otherwise the kitchen will appear cut off from the rest of the open space.

How ever you decide to update your kitchen – with new flooring, new appliances, new lighting, or new cabinets – do your research. Learn about the product, its level of quality; it’s usefulness in the kitchen. Talk to professionals. Read customer reviews. Take a look at the actual product in the store. Take photos. Measure it to make sure that it will fit in your kitchen. This way, in the end, you will be happier with the choices that you made to make your kitchen look fresh and new.

Granite Countertops New York

Fabrication and Installation of Countertops since 1987

Want to learn more about how our Founder John Murray first started fabricating countertops?

Receive *$250 off any kitchen countertop project of *40 square feet or more in New York

You’ve probably been thinking about replacing your kitchen countertops for a while now, or maybe just started to consider a possible replacement. Either way we invite you to come learn more about Counter Intelligence. We’ve been fabricating countertops since the beginning, back in 1987! Yes, it’s been a while.

We’re here to help share our experience and knowledge on granite countertops with home owners, and to provide our customers with the highest level of experience in purchasing granite countertops in New York.

Our focus and process consists of a simple breakdown; highest natural stone quality, outstanding customer service and support, sophisticated measuring equipment, innovative fabrication processes & systems, and highly trained countertop installation professionals.

Recently I completed my kitchen renovation with the purchase of granite countertops. I made the purchase through Home Depot who informed me that Counter Intelligence would be the fabricator and installer. After reviewing comments online, I have to admit that I was a bit concerned . The negative ones were not recent, though, and complaints mentioned had more to do with poor customer service than with the actual installation itself. I went forward anyway and after getting in contact with the Project Manager, Stephanie, I knew that customer service would not be an issue. She kept in touch with me constantly and was extremely supportive and promptly addressed any concerns that I had. As a widow, it was difficult at times to navigate through the process alone so she was very helpful in this regard.

I also give kudos to the fabricator who did a perfect job on the granite and to the team of Wayne and Luis, the installers who did an awesome job. I am more than satisfied with Counter Intelligence and so pleased that I stuck with them. The installation is now complete and it proved to be a truly positive experience. I would not hesitate to recommend your company should I have the opportunity to do so in the future.
Dorothy W.

Why choose Silestone

Are you interested in more information on Silestone countertops? Please contact us today, call (301) 589-5321 to speak with a representative, or request an estimate.

Strength & Excellence that Last a Lifetime

Through superior strength, incredible beauty and an unparalleled distribution network, Silestone is rapidly becoming the surfacing choice for discerning consumers. Here are the top reasons why:

Natural Beauty

Silestone has the sophisticated elegance and timeless beauty of stone. The natural quartz in Silestone delivers a distinctive depth, brilliant clarity, glimmering radiance and cool, solid feel unique to natural stones.

Versatility

Silestone can be used in virtually any indoor surfacing application, including kitchen countertops, bathroom vanities, tub and shower surrounds, backsplashes, floors, walls, wet bars, tabletops, desktops, fireplace surrounds, and more.

Widespread Availability

There is a reliable network of dedicated distributors who deliver Silestone and service customers throughout North America, including all metropolitan areas in the United States, several regions in Canada, and now even is expanding into Mexico and Puerto Rico. In North America, Silestone is available through approximately 3,500 retailers including all EXPO Design Center® stores, Home Depot® locations, as well as a variety of kitchen and bath retailers, cabinet shops, tile/flooring outlets, designers’ showrooms, architectural firms, builders, and more.

Scratch-Resistance

Only three other natural minerals -diamond, sapphire and topaz – are harder than quartz, making Silestone naturally scratch-resistant. Quartz is a seven in strength on Mohs Hardness Scale (diamond is a 10). So, while a careless slip of the knife will scratch most other countertops such as laminates and some granites, it won’t leave a mark on Silestone. Silestone is not scratch-proof, however, and can therefore be damaged with excessive force or pressure.

Stain-Resistance

Silestone’s polished surface is non-porous and thus highly resistant to stains from coffee, wine, lemon juice, olive oil, vinegar, makeup, and many other common household products. Unlike granite, Silestone does not need to be sealed to keep its lustrous shine.

Heat Resistance

Unlike solid surfaces and laminates, Silestone is heat- and scorch-resistant. It will withstand limited exposure to heat without burning or scorching. The fire of a lit match will not mar the Silestone countertop. However, as advised by crockpot and electric skillet manufacturers, do not place these items directly on any countertop. Always use trivets when placing hot items on a Silestone surface to avoid thermal shock.

Strength

Silestone has four times the flexural strength of granite, making it less susceptible to chipping and cracking than granite during transportation and installation.

Maintenance-Free

Because it is non-porous, Silestone’s polished surface doesn’t need to be sealed. Granite, marble and limestone, on the other hand, must be sealed on installation and resealed regularly to prevent staining. Cleaning Silestone is easy with soapy water or a mild household cleaner such as Formula 409®, Fantastik® or Windex®. No surface is indestructible, though. As with any other stone or surface, strong chemicals and solvents such as Drano®, Liquid Plummer®, oven cleaners and floor strippers will damage the surface and must not be used on Silestone.

Color

Silestone is available in over 42 dazzling colors, ensuring that there is a Silestone color to suit most any style or taste. Cosentino continues to grow its Silestone color palette every year. Because Silestone natural quartz delivers more color consistency than any other natural stone, homeowners can be confident when using samples to choose their Silestone countertop color.

Experience

Counter Intelligence is backed by Cosentino and its more than 70 years in the natural stone industry. Furthermore, Silestone is fabricated and installed by dedicated certified craftsmen who were trained by Cosentino through a unique curriculum that includes expert hands-on training.

Heard About Dekton Countertops?

What is Dekton?

According to the Cosentino official website, Dekton is a sophisticated blend of the raw materials used to produce the very latest in glass and porcelain as well as the highest quality quartz work surfaces. Let’s start by showing you an interesting video in which they submit Dekton countertops to several performance tests…

Discover Dekton

Imagine if you could combine the best attributes of all your favorite surface materials – both natural and engineered – what would it look like? What would you call it? What would be its strengths and weaknesses?

Cosentino took a similar approach several years ago when it decided to reinvent the manmade surface material. The idea of bringing different characteristics and features into one type of surface was a delicate process of innovation, and they called it Dekton.

Dekton merely imitates and substitutes a process in which Mother Nature takes thousands or even millions of years to produce. This is only accomplished by the use of proprietary technology as well as a state of the art facility built exclusively for the fabrication of Dekton.

Interior & Exterior Use

Dekton has unrivaled aesthetics and innovative features that make it a product of choice for use in both interior and exterior projects, contributing an extensive palette of Dekton colors. Its superior characteristics provide an exceptional resistance to UV rays which help maintain the color consistency if used in applications outdoors. These unique characteristics also provide resistance and brilliant performance when used indoors, perhaps in a kitchen, bathroom or even floors, in both residential and commercial environments.

What does a complete Dekton Kitchen look like?

We recently finished a complete kitchen renovation where the customer chose Dekton countertops for her entire kitchen, and guess what? It’s beautiful. As they say; “pictures are worth a thousand words”, so we took several photos of this particular project to show you the level of innovation and elegance that Dekton brings to a kitchen. Hopefully we captured it.

Silestone Care & Maintenance

Silestone® is virtually maintenance-free. It does not need to be sealed and cleaning is a cinch. Simply wipe the surface with soap and water on a regular basis to maintain its beauty and shine for years to come.

Difficult Spills

To remove difficult spills, soak the area for 10 minutes with a mild household cleaner (such as Formula 409®, Lysol®, or Windex®) then rinse and clean away with a soft cloth. Do not use any cleaners that contain abrasives as it will dull the surface of your polished Silestone. For stains that harden as they dry, such as food and gum, remove by gently scraping off of the surface (single edge razor blade) and then clean using warm water and soap.

Heat Protection

Silestone is resistant to heat and can withstand moderate temperatures for brief periods of time without being damaged. As with any natural stone, however, certain exposure to heat may cause cracks due to thermal shock. Always use a trivet to place hot items on Silestone. Do not use crock pots or electric skillets while in direct contact with Silestone natural quartz surfaces.

Harsh Chemicals to Avoid

The following will harm Silestone: Drano®, Liquid Plummer®, oven cleaners and floor strippers. Do NOT use these or any other harsh chemicals on your Silestone natural quartz surface.

Sunlight Exposure

Continuous long-term exposure to direct sunlight (UV rays) may result in slight discoloration of Silestone natural quartz surfaces.

General Precautions

To prolong the life of your knives, always use a cutting board. Natural quartz is one of the hardest minerals found in nature, making Silestone highly scratch-resistant. That same hardness may dull the sharpness of most knives.

Embarking on a kitchen remodeling project can be a bit intimidating for both the complexity of it as well as your wallet. Besides making your remodel affordable and hassle free, we bring the experience of tru industry proefessionals. We manufacture kitchen countertops for over 50 kitchens per month, and we renovate over 20 kitchens per month. We are NOT playing around people! (come on smile).

The truth is, we understand how hard it is for home owners like you to trust such a big costly project as a kitchen remodel to a complete stranger. This is one of the main reasons we offer to come out to your place at NO CHARGE, so that we can meet you in person and discuss your kitchen design ideas and help answer any questions you may have about your project.

We should also tell you that we have a complete staff of professional certified technicians, from master plumbers, to master electricians, to certified cabinet installers, to background-submitted employees. We also have our very own certified kitchen designers and experts who are standing by to help plan and design the kitchen of your dreams.

Nothing was damaged during installation, my kitchen remodeling was finished in less than two weeks, start to functional kitchen. Cabinets removed first day, new cabinets installed in next two days. Then they measured for granite countertops, and counters installed after two days along with dishwasher and gas stove. (I used this time to have my vinyl floor installed) then backsplash was measured and installed in a day.

SAVE BIG!

It’s free, you have nothing to loose! Fill out the easy form to the right here and one of our team experts will help setup a time and date for us to come out and visit you. For the most part we are able to provide a free estimate in our first visit for kitchen remodeling in Maryland. So what are you waiting for?

We know you may have a crazy schedule with various family activities hapening all at the same time, and that’s why we come out when it is best for you. We adapt our schedule to yours.

Most kitchen design projects can be completed within a few weeks depending on the scope of the job of course. Kitchen cabinets sometimes can take a little longer to get delivered depending on the availability as well as the requirements for them. These are all things that we analyze in detail when we come out to provide an estimate. Our goal is to help you understand what exactly is involved in a kitchen remodeling project. We want to discuss ideas, design, layout, space, family activities, and all the things that matter most to you inside your home.

INCREASE THE VALUE OF YOUR HOME

So, you want to sell the house? Then I’m sure you want the next home owner to absolutely fall in love with the house. Well, let me tell you that the first place the “wife” will be looking at (and paying extreme attention to) is going to be the kitchen, and second thing will be the bathroom – or bathrooms – in the house. I can assure you that.

So why not raise the value of the house by remodeling the kitchen? Also, depending on the condition, you may want to think about replacing the bathroom or at least give your powder room a boost. I bring this up again, because remember, that in “most” cases, it is the wife that is purchasing the house, not the husband (trust me… I know from experience here!).

You can get a huge return on your investment by really selling the kitchen (remember that wife?) as the one place where the entire family can come together. The kitchen is the hub for any family. Most people buy homes – not houses – remember that.

Bottom line is, if you are looking for a reputable kitchen remodeling company in Maryland, then you are in the right place. We are genuinely here to help with any questions or concerns, and able to provide a free estimate in the comfort of your home. Give us a call.
